Brazil-UN Fund for Sustainable Development of the Amazon
The UN System in Brazil, the Federal Government and the Brazilian Amazon States Consortium have partnered to accelerate the sustainable development of the Brazilian Amazon. This partnership proposes a territorial approach to boost human and economic development in harmony with natural ecosystems, via the establishment of a programmatic-financial mechanism.
Among the areas of cooperation, the UN System, the Federal Government and the Amazon States Consortium will raise external and internal resources, including by the creation of a United Nations Multiparter Trust Fund (MPTF) to finance a coordinated response to support the sustainable development of the region.
The overarching goal of the Brazil-UN Fund for Sustainable Development of the Amazon is to promote a coordinated response to accelerate the sustainable development of the Legal Amazon in an integrated and cooperative manner, considering the regional opportunities and challenges.
The unique environmental characteristics and the specific social and economic profile of the region indicate the need to advance public policies aimed at regional development, through a territorial approach, with a view of benefiting its population by tackling inequalities and fulfilling human rights.
The financing made possible by the Brazil-UN Fund will strengthen the region’s capacity to face the triple planetary crisis – climate change, air pollution, and biodiversity loss.
